What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is a family of dermal fillers in the form of a sterile gel. The gel is made from a naturally occurring sugar in the skin called hyaluronic acid. Juvederm specifically targets certain areas and lines in the face including cheeks, lips and facial lines. Juvederm products include the following:
Voluma – adds volume to correct volume loss in the cheeks that occurs over time with age and helps to create a more youthful appearance.
Ultra XC and Volbella XC – Ultra XC adds fullness to lips and Volbella XC adds subtle volume to lips as well as softens the appearance of vertical lip lines.
Vollure XC – creates a smoother facial appearance by softening moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles.
How Does Juvéderm Work?
Juvéderm works by adding volume to the facial tissue by filling in lines and recesses with hyaluronic acid. Your body produces hyaluronic acid naturally which stimulates the production of collagen and in turn plumps the skin. As you get older, the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid decreases, which increases the appearance of wrinkles and sags in the skin.
Also, these products are not hydrophilic, which means they don’t absorb much water from the surrounding tissue over time. This leads to immediate results at the time of injection and you don’t have to wait to see the improvements as with products that are hydrophilic. Another great quality about Juvéderm is that all 3 Juvéderm products are reversible. This allows for fine tuning or even removal of the product altogether for the rare patient who simply doesn’t relate to his or her transformed appearance.
How Long Does Juvéderm Last?
Juvéderm treatments last from 6 months to 2 years depending on the product used. Juvéderm’s Vycross technology doubles the staying power which means greater value and ease of “touch up” treatment for long term maintenance of the result.
Is Juvéderm Safe?
Juvéderm is safe and was approved by the FDA in 2006. It is used in over 2 million procedures yearly. There are some common side effects that usually subside within a few weeks including redness, tenderness and itching. It’s important to always use qualified medical professionals that have experience performing Juvéderm injections to administer treatments. Some more serious side effects can occur with unprofessional handling if injected into the wrong depth or into the blood stream.
