What Is Botox?
Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment with more than 6 million treatments administered each year. It’s a natural, purified protein made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A that is derived from a bacteria found naturally in soil, forests and lakes. It’s manufactured and purified by the pharmaceutical company Allergan.
How Does It Work?
Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, lines and furrows. Botox blocks neuro-transmitters that tell the muscles to contract or expand. When the muscles of facial expression relax, your expression softens and lines fade away. The molecules in both are relatively large so they cannot be absorbed into the skin tissue. Therefore, Botox works effectively contained at the injection site.
What Does It Treat?
Botox will treat any part of the face where there are fine lines or furrows. Some commonly treated areas are:
- Sides of the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Frown lines between the brows
- The corners of the lips
- Forehead worry lines and furrows
How Long Does it Last?
Once the Botox has been injected, the softening of the lines in your face will become apparent within a few hours and strengthen over the period of a week. At the end of the week, you will see the main effects. We recommend new treatments every 3 to 4 months.
Is Botox Safe?
Though Botox is safe, it’s important to always use qualified medical professionals to administer injections. It’s important to get the right dosage, the right depth of the injection, the right area for the injection, etc. Using inexperienced personnel can lead to results such as asymmetrical facial features and muscle drooping.
